Well, it is finally here … Election Day 2024. No more political ads. No more speeches. No more arguments. No more name calling. If only!!!
We have been hammered with political news (more like noise) for over two years. Constituents, and those running for office, have been called Hitler, nazis, deplorable and most recently, garbage. Regardless of your political leanings, this rhetoric has to strike a chord somewhere. I understand that most of it is designed to solicit a response but, some may take it to the extreme like the two individuals who tried to assassinate former President Trump.
There are indeed some ‘crazies’ out there who need just a slight push from the right direction to start taking matters into their own hands. Today, I am sure that all polling places will have extra security to ensure a peaceful experience. There were fires set in ballot boxes in Vancouver, Washington, Phoenix, Arizona and Portland, Oregon. Who’s to say that someone might decide to initiate some kind of disturbance at a local polling place? There will be thousands of citizens standing in line to cast their vote and this would make a soft target for troublemakers.
In the words of John Farnam, “Don’t go to stupid places, with stupid people and do stupid things and you should be okay.” Now, I realize voting is not a stupid thing and is not done in stupid places, but you have no control over the stupid people part. So here is some advice to help keep you safe:
· As always, stay aware of your surroundings. Don’t go to any large political gatherings, rallies, or demonstrations. But, if you happen to run up on one, keep your distance and move away.
· Protect your personal information and limit conversations to mundane topics - if at all – and DON’T discuss politics! Watch yourself on social media as well.
· Have an emergency plan. This includes how to get back to your home from work, the polling place where you vote, and any other place you may be. Keep your phone charged as well.
· In our local paper yesterday, there is an article on the front page titled, ‘Workers Prepare for Violence at the Polls’ and outlines someone getting punched in the face, ballot boxes being set on fire and a teenager wielding a machete at people in line to vote! (Remember, you have no control over the ‘stupid people’ part.) All this has occurred before Election Day!
Some officials have installed panic buttons and hired security but, if you are the target, or somehow involved, that may not be enough. The Georgia Board of Elections approved $2.4 million for increased security. Other municipalities in the state have also coordinated security and response plans with local law enforcement agencies.
Using common sense and listening to your ‘spidey sense’ will go a long way toward ensuring your vote is cast and counted with no interruptions. Then let's see how things turn out. Hoping for the best for our country. I've done my part.
BE SAFE. BE EFFECTIVE. BE READY.
